1. Watch Out for Unsafe Foods
Thanksgiving meals often include ingredients that can be harmful to pets. Avoid feeding your pet:
- Turkey bones: These can splinter and cause choking or internal injuries.
- Onions, garlic, and chives: Toxic to dogs and cats.
- Chocolate, grapes, and raisins: Dangerous for pets, even in small amounts.
- Rich, fatty foods: These can upset your pet’s stomach or lead to more serious issues like pancreatitis.
Instead, share safe, pet-friendly treats like small amounts of plain turkey (no skin or seasoning), plain green beans, or a dollop of mashed sweet potato.
2. Create a Calm Space

With all the excitement, doors may be left open. Keep an eye on pets to ensure they don’t slip outside, and consider using a baby gate or closed room to keep them safely inside.

Make Thanksgiving special for your pets by including them in safe ways:

- Give them a festive toy to keep them entertained while you feast.
6. Remember Shelter Pets
While you’re giving thanks, consider the animals waiting for homes. Donate food, supplies, or funds to your local shelter, or open your home to a foster pet.
