Thanksgiving is a time to gather with loved ones—including your furry family members! While it’s a day for celebration, it’s important to keep your pets’ safety and comfort in mind. Here are some tips to ensure your pets have a happy, safe Thanksgiving.

1. Watch Out for Unsafe Foods

Thanksgiving meals often include ingredients that can be harmful to pets. Avoid feeding your pet:

  • Turkey bones: These can splinter and cause choking or internal injuries.
  • Onions, garlic, and chives: Toxic to dogs and cats.
  • Chocolate, grapes, and raisins: Dangerous for pets, even in small amounts.
  • Rich, fatty foods: These can upset your pet’s stomach or lead to more serious issues like pancreatitis.

Instead, share safe, pet-friendly treats like small amounts of plain turkey (no skin or seasoning), plain green beans, or a dollop of mashed sweet potato.

2. Create a Calm Space

With guests coming and going, your pets might feel overwhelmed. Set up a quiet, cozy spot where they can retreat if they need a break. Make sure their bed, favorite toys, and water are easily accessible.

3. Keep Decorations Pet-Friendly

Thanksgiving decorations like candles and seasonal plants (such as lilies or poinsettias) can be hazardous to pets. Opt for flameless candles and keep décor out of reach of curious paws.

4. Mind the Doors

With all the excitement, doors may be left open. Keep an eye on pets to ensure they don’t slip outside, and consider using a baby gate or closed room to keep them safely inside.

5. Include Them in the Fun

Make Thanksgiving special for your pets by including them in safe ways:

  • Prepare a pet-friendly plate with their favorite safe foods.
  • Take them for a post-meal walk to enjoy the fall weather.
  • Give them a festive toy to keep them entertained while you feast.

6. Remember Shelter Pets

While you’re giving thanks, consider the animals waiting for homes. Donate food, supplies, or funds to your local shelter, or open your home to a foster pet.

This Thanksgiving, let’s make it a celebration for the whole family—two-legged and four-legged alike! 🐾🍂
