Pets for Life

We understand the importance and value of the human-animal bond

At Paws Humane, we understand the importance and value of the human-animal bond. Therefore, all of our community outreach efforts reflect our goal of promoting animal welfare, preventing the overpopulation of pets and improving the lives of not only animals, but the community as a whole.

Paws is proud to be mirroring the Pets For Life model, a program developed by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) that uses innovative outreach strategies to extend animal services, resources, and information to underserved communities.

Pets for Life community outreach program in action

Building Relationships, Saving Lives

Through Pets for Life, Paws Humane offers outreach services such as free or low-cost spay/neuter surgeries, educational events that include pet care and training, and humane education. By comprehensively addressing the lack of accessible, affordable pet care in under-served communities, Pets for Life keeps pets in the homes they already have, improving their quality of life and elevating the human-animal bond.

Pets for Life embraces the human component of the human-animal equation by approaching people in a respectful way and recognizing that people's love for their pets transcends socioeconomic circumstances and cultural differences. Building trustful relationships with people and establishing an ongoing presence in the community is critical to making a real impact.

Pet-Friendly Housing: Our Neighborhood Pet Support Coordinator can help with housing options, renter's insurance information, and landlord negotiations. Call 706-987-0009.

Spay it Forward Program: Qualifying individuals can receive spaying/neutering and wellness services (vaccines, microchip, heartworm preventative) at discounted prices. Email vetclinic@pawshumane.org or call 706-987-8380.

How can I rehome my pet without surrendering to the shelter? +
Our Neighborhood Pets program allows you to list your pet for adoption on our website completely free of charge. This service helps transition pet ownership between homes without your pet entering the shelter system.

You can create a listing for your dog or cat on our website, and we'll help connect you with loving families seeking pets. This direct adoption approach is less stressful for your pet and gives you control over selecting the right family.

For assistance with creating a listing or to learn more, call or text 706-987-0009. Click here for a comprehensive guide on how to rehome your pet with our Paws Rehoming Playbook
What is the surrender process if I've exhausted all alternatives? +
If you've explored all alternatives, here's what you need to know about surrendering:

Appointment Required: All surrenders are by appointment only. Due to crisis capacity, appointments are currently booked 8-16 weeks out.

Surrender Fee: There is a $50 fee per animal to help cover care costs. Paws Humane is a 501c3 nonprofit, and this fee helps us continue supporting over 3,000 animals annually.

Assessment Process: We must assess your pet's behavior and adoptability before placement into our adoption program.

Submit the appropriate surrender form on our website to request an appointment:
Dog Surrender Application
Cat Surrender Application
Small Animal Surrender Application
Why should I try to avoid surrendering my pet to a shelter? +
While Paws Humane provides excellent care for over 3,000 animals annually, an animal shelter is a stressful environment for any pet, especially those accustomed to home life, and is not recommended as a rehoming option.

Owned pets often experience anxiety and behavioral changes in shelter environments. No shelter can compare to the love, routine, and individual attention a pet receives in a home setting.

That's why we urge you to utilize all available resources and alternatives before considering surrender. Our goal is to keep pets with their families whenever possible, and we're here to support you through challenges.
