Understanding Animal Cruelty

Animal cruelty encompasses behavior harmful to animals ranging from neglect to malicious killing. It's important to distinguish the differences between neglect and cruelty.

Neglect

Failure to provide basic necessities like food, water, shelter, or veterinary care. Often unintentional and can be addressed through education and support.

Intentional Cruelty

Knowingly depriving an animal of basic needs or maliciously torturing, maiming, mutilating, or killing an animal. This requires immediate intervention.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens after I make a report? +
After you make a report, an Animal Services Officer will be assigned to investigate within 24-48 hours for non-emergency cases, or immediately for urgent situations. The officer will visit the location, assess the animal's condition, and take appropriate action. This may include educating the owner, issuing warnings, providing resources, or in severe cases, removing the animal and pressing charges.
Can I remain anonymous when reporting? +
Yes, you can remain anonymous when reporting suspected animal cruelty. While providing your contact information can be helpful for follow-up questions, it is not required. Your safety and comfort in reporting is important to us. Anonymous reports are investigated with the same diligence as those with contact information provided.
What's the difference between animal control issues and cruelty? +
Animal control issues include barking dogs, loud cats, loose animals, or wildlife concerns. These are quality-of-life or safety issues that don't involve harm to the animal. Animal cruelty involves neglect or intentional harm to an animal, such as lack of food, water, shelter, medical care, or physical abuse. While both are important, cruelty cases require immediate intervention to protect the animal's welfare.
What if I'm wrong about suspected cruelty? +
It's better to err on the side of caution when an animal's welfare is at stake. If you report in good faith based on your observations, you've done the right thing. Animal Services Officers are trained to assess situations professionally and objectively. If the animal is found to be properly cared for, no action will be taken against the owner, and your report will have provided peace of mind that the animal is safe.
